"'I've been wrestling with a problem at one of my clients where the Finder will SPOD in Open and Save dialogs, and we've narrowed it down to something on the LAN, probably a problem with an Xserve.': You may very well be right about that, but another cause of SPODs in Open and Save dialogs is spun-down disks. In some cases, it's obvious because you can hear the disks spinning up, or you may be able to see a pulsing light on external drives. For very quiet disks, however, there's often no external clue that they're spinning up. Note also that I'm not just talking about hard drives. CDs/DVDs that need to spin up will also cause SPODs in open/save dialogs. Once the disks all come up to speed, then the SPOD goes away and everything works as expected. As you noted, networked drives could cause a similar problem if they're slow to respond." MacInTouch 4:08 PM
