Apple said “Hola Mexico” with a big, bold mural as it opened its first retail store in the country over the weekend.

Many Apple fans queued overnight to be among the first into the new store, which is located in Mexico City’s upscale Vía Santa Fe mall.

“¡Gracias México por recibirnos!” Tim Cook tweeted after the opening, which was attended by 200 Apple employees.

Apple’s retail boss Angela Ahrendts chipped in to praise Mexico City as “one of the world’s top cultural and economic citiespost-Jony Ive redesign. It’s got the “Avenues”-inspired layout reminiscent of window displays on a shopping street, and interactive wall displays.

The first Mexican Apple store also offers a couple of unique flourishes.

One is a special Boardroom that Apple says will offer hands-on training to entrepreneurs, developers and other business customers in a dedicated conference room.

The other is the special Mexican mural that Apple commissioned for the grand opening, similar to the kind of localizing touch Apple has included for some of its retail stores in China.

While the focus continues to be on Apple opening new retail stores in markets like India and China, it’s great to see the company continue to spread into new markets. It’s even better when Apple offers something extra on top of the regular shopping experience we’re all expecting.
