AMD Zen News: Next-Gen Chip Performs Better Than Expected?

The AMD Zen has gotten a lot of news buzz considering it's the company's statement in some way to reclaim its role as the leader in chip manufacturing.

Most reports said that AMD Zen brings back the company to the forefront of innovation that dates back to the Athlon days. One reason for the buzz is that the chip is not just a small tweak over its predecessor, but actually a brand new architecture from the very same man who oversaw the production of Athlon XP and Athlon64.

Last year, the company said that AMD Zen would be 40% better than Excavator. But now, a news report alleged that the chip is even performing better than expected.

"Our Zen-based CPU development is on track to achieve greater than 40% IPC uplift from our previous generation and we're on schedule to sample later this year," said AMD President Lisa Su during the recent quarter earnings, per WCCFTech. "In client computing, our opportunities to regain share in 2016 will be driven by our design win momentum, continued progress expanding into the commercial market."

In related news, leaked reports have pointed to the new AM4 socket, which is the next step to the AMD Zen computers. The AM4 socket is touted to support the Summit Ridge CPU line of the company along with the Bristol Ridge APU. This is in line with the company's efforts to rationalize its motherboards to make sure both the APUs and CPUs are compatible with each other.

According to multiple news reports, the AMD Zen will be rolled out before 2020.
