In-Brief: Bricsys Talks Adding Artificial Intelligence (AI) to DWG-based CAD System

Adding artificial intelligence to a 2/3D CAD system is just one of the things Belgium-based Bricsys looks to be doing as it discusses the future and lastest advances with its BricsCAD program at its annual user conference, currently running this week in Munich, Germany.

Today is the second day at Bricsys’s conference in Germany and the company is discussing all the new tech in its new BricsCAD 2017 in more detail. Ralph Grabowski, of WorldCAD Access, is blogging and tweeting about the event live.

We have written about BricsCAD before numerous times but for readers who may not be familiar, it is a full AutoCAD clone similar to Graebert’s ARES Commander. One interesting difference between that program and BricsCAD is the latter’s intent on focusing on the BIM market as well as serving as a 2D-3D DWG platform for the MCAD world.

While we will write more thoroughly about BricsCAD 2017 next week, in this post we want to mention a few items. One is that BricsCAD 2017 will advance its BIM capabilities by allowing customizable parametric symbol libraries. These will be useful to both AEC users in BIM as well as its sheet metal design users—a focus area of BricsCAD.

It also looks like BricsCAD will employ artificial intelligence in the future. Things that AI could do for its users would be for taking 2D DWG drawings and smartly automating walls, floor, roofs, and stories, etc, in the conversion to a full BIM model. AI could also be applied to other areas of the program and other industry workflows.

Back to BIM, BricsCAD recently has received IFC certification and is apparently working on CoBIE and BCF (BIM Collaboration Format) certification. The company is essentially pushing the concept that the DWG file format is hardly foreclosed from being a true BIM platform—as opposed to Autodesk which has moved to Revit as its BIM technology platform—and that compared to Autodesk’s newer (Revit) AEC platform, there are far more AEC users still based on DWG.
