AMD strikes back with lower Radeon RX 460, 470 prices

The graphics card wars on the low-end is heating up. Addressing a gaping hole in its portfolio, NVIDIA last week revealed the new GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti, both sitting on the lower end of its new Pascal line. Given the price tag, it was easily seen as encroaching on what is traditionally considered to be AMD's turf. Naturally, the latter isn't taking things sitting down and, while it hasn't made much noise about it, prizes for its Radeon 460 and Radeon 470 VR-ready cars are dropping all around.

AMD announced the two graphics just last June, at the height of the virtual reality fever on PCs, heralded by the arrival of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets. The promise of the Radeon 460 and 470 cards was irresistible: wallet-friendly video cards that had enough muscle to support VR experiences.

That is the part that AMD will most likely lord over NVIDIA, at least for the time being. As much as NVIDIA boasted about the GTX 1050's and 1050's Pascal architecture, the one thing missing from its spec sheet was VR capabilities. While, in theory, the cards may support minimum specs, official confirmation would still go a long way.

Now there's another thing that AMD has over NVIDIA: price. Retailers have apparently slashed the prices for the two cards just a wee bit. The Radeon RX 460 now retails for around $100 after an almost $10 cut. The stronger RX 470, on the other hand, goes for around $180 to $184, roughly $20 lower than its launching price.

The price differences might be small for some, but when you're so pressed for budget that you're willing to go to the low-end, those savings add up. That said, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, is still cheaper at $139. All it's missing is a "VR Ready" stamp.
