5 Things to Know About Apple CarPlay

Apple is reportedly invading BlackBerry's territory in search of engineering talent.

Bloomberg reports that the iPhone maker has "dozens of software engineers" in Canada working on a car operating system. About two dozen of those engineers came right from BlackBerry-owned automotive software developer QNX — including, most notably, its founder and former CEO Dan Dodge.

Citing a former QNX executive, Bloomberg says "Apple targeted QNX employees because of their experience developing fundamental components of operating systems and power management."

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. The company reportedly declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg.

Dodge is reportedly now overseeing development of the operating system that may one day power Apple's car. A separate team is developing the self-driving functionality. But the reports follows recent rumors that Apple's car project has hit a roadblock. The New York Times last month reported that Cupertino has "laid of dozens" of people as its car effort, dubbed Project Titan, shrinks.

We've heard rumors about Apple's auto ambitions for more than a year, but the company has never publicly acknowledged that it's working on a car. CEO Tim Cook has remained coy about it. "We look for ways that we can improve the experiences on different sets of products," he said when asked about an iCar during yesterday's earnings call. "It's clear that there's a lot of technology that will become available to revolutionize the car experience."
