Microsoft says new builds would be released in early 2017

Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, announced on Twitter that the company would not release a new Windows 10 build this year, as the development team is preparing for the Christmas holidays.

Dona explains that the existing builds compiled internally aren’t running well enough to be shipped to users, and getting new builds ready requires too much time. The Windows team will obviously get some days off during the holidays, and given the work that needs to be done before and after the release of a new build, shipping new bits to insiders is impossible

“No more builds this week. We don’t love the current options and don’t want to leave you in a bad state during the holidays,” Dona announced. “And this also means no more builds for 2016. We will release ISO for the Slow ring next week.”

Busy start of 2017

And while today’s announcement doesn’t come as a big surprise given the fact that it’s almost Christmas, the first months of 2017 are likely to be super-busy for both Microsoft and its users.

The Windows 10 Creators Update is due in early 2017, and according to people familiar with the matter, the debut could take place in March, which means that Microsoft has approximately 3 months to get the update ready for prime time.

The first builds will most likely ship in the first weeks of January, and they are likely to come with more new features than before, especially because we’re getting closer to the final launch.

For the moment, insiders can download build 14986, which also comes with some pretty big changes, including new Cortana features to shut down PCs and control music playback.

The Creators Update will bring many more changes on both PCs and mobile devices, and expect the next few months to bring an early look at some of them.
