(Retracted) Apple Appears To Be Censoring Reviews Of 5K Display Performance With macOS

Updated 1/26/2017: Upon further, deeper investigation it turns out our original article contained inaccurate information. Apple never included user reviews for the LG 5K Display, so it is not possible that the company could have censored negative feedback. The reasons for Apple's approach to this are unknown, as reviews for the LG 4K Display are available and have been since the product was first introduced.

With that being said, the Ratings & Reviews section for the LG 5K Display is now open for public commentary. We apologize for our error in reporting but felt it was important to update this article with complete and accurate detail.

Not everyone can take constructive (and not so constructive) criticism. Negative reviews for the Apple endorsed LG Ultrafine 5K display have been removed from Apple’s web store. Many suspect that the corporation is deliberately censoring its reviews.

reddit user “michael emery” first reported the mysterious deletions several days ago. Since then, his post has received over 300 comments and over 1,000 upvotes. Many frustrated customers have since started to leave negative reviews for the LG Ultrafine 4K Display, the 5K’s little sibling. The display currently averages only 2.5 stars out of 5. According to the Apple web store, however, the 4K is no longer available online.

LG UltraFine 5K

The biggest complaint surrounding the LG Ultrafine 5K display is that often fails to wake from sleep. When users have attempted to physically reconnect or manually restart the monitor, it has caused issues with the Touch Bar, crashed, or remained unresponsive. Some believe that the monitors may be having problems when when FileVault is enabled. Apple has failed to offer its own explanation.

The LG Ultrafine 5K is a 27-inch panel with a 5120x2880 resolution. It also incorporates a P3 wide color gamut and 500 cd/m2 brightness. The 5K includes speakers, a camera, three USB-C ports, and it provides up to 85W of charging power. The 4K is a 21.5-inch display with a 4096x2304 resolution, P3 wide color gamut, and 500 cd/m2 brightness. It provides 60W of charging power to the MacBook or MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 ports and does not include a camera.

not available

The 5K is currently priced at $974 while the 4K runs $524.  Both displays are currently unavailable at other retailers, so you are unable to leave reviews on other store sites.
