Apple and Blackberry Find New Ways to Generate Revenue

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / April 3, 2017 / The two tech giants have found different ways to expand their reach and increase revenue streams. Apple won an important court case, while BlackBerry made itself available to automotive companies and enterprise businesses.

Apple dropped 0.19% to close at $143.66 on Friday. The stock traded between $143.01 and $144.27 on a volume of 19.66 million shares traded. Despite Friday's trading session, Apple's stock has risen by 24% since the beginning of the year.

In other news, Apple has won a court decision in Australia that prevents banks from putting their own payment apps on Apple mobile devices. The Australian mobile banking potential is estimated to be $84 billion. Whether this win will adversely affect Apple mobile device sales remains to be seen, but the company is likely to use the Australian court decision to challenge other international financial institutions from putting their own mobile payment apps on iPhones and iPads.

BlackBerry advanced 11.51% to close at $7.75 on Friday. The stock traded between $7.47 and $8.08 on a volume of 53.84 million shares traded. On March 31st, the company shared new details on its broad licensing strategy and reported results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 that topped expectations.

Total revenues for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 were $286 million, resulting in a positive cash flow from operations of $19 million. GAAP net loss for the fiscal fourth quarter was $47 million, or ($0.09) per basic share. The company expects to be profitable for second year in a row and expects to generate positive free cash flow in fiscal year 2018.
