  • Isn’t it obvious why Apple’s no longer going to support 32-bit iOS apps? When they came out with 64-bit processors (their own designs, exclusively for their own products), they had to engineer those processors to be backward-compatible with 32-bit code. But if they didn’t have to have that backward compatibility, then they could be some combination of the following:

    * smaller
    * cheaper
    * faster
    * less battery-hungry
    * less heat-generating

    I’m betting future A-series processors will ditch 32-bit support altogether, and thus be more competitive. Apple’s forcing third-party app developers to recompile for 64-bit (not a difficult thing) to make sure they can make a clean break from 32-bit in the near future.
