Apple is pushing Apple Watch adoption among its corporate and retail employees with a “Close The Rings” challenge that lets people working for the company win prizes for filling the rings on their Apple Watch.

Employees who complete the various stand, movement, and exercise challenges every day for a month can win an Activity rings pin, which are available in gold, silver, and bronze, depending on performance. There are also (future collectible) T-shirts available, reading “Close The Rings Challenge 1.0.”

#CloseTheRings

The program is being run for around 40,000 Apple employees. It’s run using the Challenges iOS app, although only people who work for Apple can join the competition by entering a secret code into the app. Searching Twitter for the hashtag #CloseTheRings will reveal photos taken by plenty of Apple employees as they try to complete the challenge.

The competition follows on from fitness-targeted “Close The Rings” ads Apple has released for the Apple Watch this year, although Apple’s internal competition augments this by offering real prizes rather than just, you know, improved fitness and wellness.

It’s not the only example we’ve heard of for this kind of thing, however. While it’s still not as mainstream as I’d have expected, we’ve already seen health insurers jump on the Apple Watch bandwagon by introducing discounts for buying the device so long as they then hit all of their fitness-related exercise goals.

This idea makes perfect sense to me, since incentivizing people to stay healthy by offering them discounts on Apple products (or potentially discounted insurance premiums) is a win-win for all involved.

Unfortunately, only the Apple scheme will actually get you a T-shirt or pin, however. So either join an Apple store, apply for another job with the company, or keep watching eBay.
