Apple to Begin Production of Two New iMacs in May, Server Grade iMac Also On the Way?

Apple is preparing two new iMac models to begin production in May and launch in the second half of the year, reports DigiTimes.

Sources in the Taiwan supply chain claim that Apple is testing a new server grade iMac for the high-end sector that will compete with the Microsoft Surface Studio.

The two new iMacs for 2017 are expected to be manufactured by Quanta Computer. Thanks to its orders from Apple and HP, Quanta is expected to remain the largest AIO PC maker in 2017. However, Quanta declined to comment on its orders or clients.


The new iMacs are expected to be upgrades of the current 21.5-inch and 27-inch models. They should be available in the third quarter to capture holiday season sales.

The server grade iMac is said to feature Intel's Xeon E3-1285 v6 processor, 16-64GB ECC RAM, up to 2TB NVMe SSD and a latest discrete graphics card. It likely will not be available until the end of 2017.

Notably, Apple has officially announced that it will release a pro iMac later this year.

"We’re going to begin making configurations of iMac specifically with the pro customer in mind", said Apple SVP Phil Schiller.
