Sony Upgrades PS4 Slim With 1TB Hard Drive

It's not uncommon for games to reach 50GB in size, meaning the 500GB of storage typically found inside a PS4 or Xbox One is soon filled up. Sony realizes this, and decided it was time to offer more storage as standard.

So this week, the PS4 Slim received a very welcome upgrade. It will now ship with a 1TB hard drive while retaining its $299.99 price point.

Everything else remains the same. Included with the console is a Jet Black DualShock 4 controller, HDMI cable, power cable, wired mono headset, and USB charging cable. It will be possible to pick one up this week, but retailers have yet to get stock. GameStop lists the release date as tomorrow, April 20.

If you're planning to upgrade the hard drive inside the PS4 Slim beyond 1TB, then you're better off picking up the existing 500GB version and saving some cash. For example, Amazon is currently offering the 500GB PS4 with Uncharted bundled for $255, or with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition for $282.

It's already possible to pick up a 1TB Xbox One S for under $300, so that isn't really a concern for Microsoft. However, what may concern them about this move is how it looks for Project Scorpio later this year. Microsoft lists Scorpio as having a 1TB hard drive. By the time Scorpio launches, we'll all be used to seeing the PS4 with a 1TB drive, and the PS4 Pro ($369.99 at GameStop) already ships with one. Could Microsoft rethink and increase Scorpio's hard drive size prior to launch so as to outdo Sony?
