Microsoft Again Issues Surface Book, Surface Pro 4 Fixes for Creators Update Only

Following in the footsteps of a similar set of updates from three weeks ago, Microsoft has again issued updates for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. But only for those already on Windows 10 version 1703 (the Creators Update).

“Today we’ve released updated drivers for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 Creators Update,” Microsoft’s Brandon Records explains. “These include new driver updates [that] improve video playback on installed apps while offline.”

I've always wondered why audio controllers don't have codec functionality built into them. Why do we need separate drivers for them?

In reply to Waethorn:

Harder to improve silicon over time than drivers. Not to mention, in the case of codecs, licensing (so I won't).

In reply to johnbaxter:

I'm talking about the hardware codecs – the mixer hardware and the circuitry for the analog connections and such. I'm not talking about MP3, AAC, or such. HD Audio controllers are built into most motherboard chipsets now, but you still need a separate codec chip for the connections (except for HDMI audio, which is handled by the video chipset). And that codec requires a separate, and unique driver. The HD audio controller also requires a driver, but Windows has included a class driver for it for as long as I can remember.

Do we know if the same driver updates will be offered to SB and SP4 ownes who have moved on from the CU and are already running an early RS3 release? My Fast Ring SB keeps telling me it is up to date, but there are no recent driver installs in its update history.

So after trying to install the Surface Pro 4 Updates from April 25, I came to the conclusion that they would not install on on my Surface because I am on the Insiders Update Redstone 3 cycle. I wonder if it matters.

In reply to johnlavey:

Yes, it would. Insiders Update builds can have and has had driver incompatibilities.

If the rollout of the Creator's update (well any new version of Windows 10 for that matter) was quick and efficient, I'd have no problem with this. As it isn't, they're making millions of Surface owners wait an indeterminate amount of time for firmware/driver updates that they could be enjoying the benefits of, for no real reason that I can see.

Sure, the user could manually update their device to 1703 rather than wait for their place in line, and I bet many will, but they shouldn't have to. Microsoft should be making firmware/driver updates available to all device owners no matter the version of the OS.

Anyway, just my $0.02. You are free to disagree :)
