Friday Labs unveils new minimalist & easy-to-install smart lock w/ HomeKit support

As HomeKit continues to expand in popularity, a pair of new smart locks have been introduced that both embrace the platform. Friday Labs has introduced the new Friday Lock, while Danalock has unveiled a new V3 smart lock.

First, the Friday Lock claims to be the “world’s smallest smart lock” with the goals of solving many problems that currently plague smart locks: difficult isolation and unattractive designs. To design Friday Lock, Friday Labs partnered with architectural group BIG, which is actually the group behind Google’s new headquarters as well as Hyperloop One.

The design of Friday Lock makes it the “world’s smallest and most stylish” smart lock, as well as easy to install. The smart lock is made to fit over the previous lock’s footprint, meaning that only a single color-coded plate is required to make the smart lock appear natural.

The Friday Universal Baseplate is used to mount Friday Lock over the previous lock’s footprint – and it’s the first such solution in the world to require only a single color-coded plate making it simple and streamlined to match to your door. No locksmith is required.

In addition to its sleek design, the Friday Lock also features a variety of other capabilyies. For instance, a feature called Friday Assist uses geofencing to automatically lock or unlock your door placed on your GPS location. Another feature, Remote Key, allows users to grant other residents either indefinite access or limited access.

Friday Key will be available later this month from retailers, but is available for pre-order on Friday Labs’ website for $249.

Furthermore, Danish smart lock maker Danalock has announced a new Danalock V3 smart lock that is the “industry’s first” to use Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256 encryption providing superior lock-code security.

“Our Danalock V3 aims for fast and simple installation, intuitive set up, and foolproof operation,” said Henning Overgaard, CEO at Danalock . “This adds significantly to its individual consumer appeal and its benefits for those who plan to use them in quantity,” he added.

Danalock V3 is slated to ship later this month and can be ordered here.

Friday Labs Introduces Friday Lock – The World’s Smallest And Most Stylish Retrofit  Lock

Developed with the latest security technologies, Friday Lock is HomeKit™-enabled and available to pre-order at fridaylabs.net*

Tuesday, 2nd May 2017 – London, UK – Friday Labs announces the availability of Friday Lock from today. Friday Lock is the world’s smallest retrofit lock, and the only lock to offer Bluetooth, WiFi and HomeKit in one product. Friday Lock is built with the latest security technologies, and is controlled by an app on the users phone.  Friday Lock was designed in a groundbreaking collaboration with architectural group BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group – the architects behind Google’s new HQ and Hyperloop One.  Friday Lock’s changeable shell comes in seven classic finishes including copper, bronze, gun metal, brass, silver, nickel satin and porcelain to complement any door style.

“We’re delighted to announce Friday Lock’s availability today. Friday Labs is a design-driven company  – our goal is to provide users with secure, connected products that encompass functional design and feel good to use, said Marcus Tempte, CEO of Friday Labs. He continued, “We’ve created a beautiful lock with changeable shells made from die cast metal with gorgeous finishes to make doors fit naturally in with the rest of the house or any room.”

Jakob Lange, Partner BIG, and Director of BIG Ideas commented, “The success of any consumer electronic product depends on three main factors: the design, the features and the usability. However most products today are over designed and have too many features, thus creating a complex interface and ultimately decreasing its ease of use.

“With Friday Lock, we focused on creating a smart and simple design that doesn’t shout, “I’m a very intelligent object on your door” with flashing lights and other tech gimmicks,” Jakob continued. “Instead we optimized the most important features, kept the design simple with a nod to the classic door knob and most importantly, designed it to be as small as possible.”

With Friday Lock, the user is always in control of who has access, and sharing can be easily granted through the iOS or Android app. Features include:

Universal Baseplate™

The Friday Universal Baseplate is used to mount Friday Lock over the previous lock’s footprint – and it’s the first such solution in the world to require only a single color-coded plate making it simple and streamlined to match to your door. No locksmith is required.

Remote Key™

A fundamental feature of Friday Lock is the ability to grant access remotely to friends, family, workers, guests, or anyone else who might require access to your home. The Remote Key system is easy to understand and use. There are two main options: one-time access or unlimited access. Granting access is as simple as sending a text message, and you can revoke access at any time.

Friday Assist™

Friday Assist is another key feature of Friday Lock. The lock’s geofencing and proximity sensing operations are used by Friday Assist to detect your smartphone within a certain geographical distance. Users can automatically operate the lock based on movement into or out of the geofenced area. This allows

the user to open the door without even having to take their phone out of their pocket. As long as the user has an app-enabled phone, no keys are needed.

Over-Torque™

Friday Lock’s Over-Torque feature is designed to safeguard the mechanics and electrics located beneath the lock’s shell. Friday Lock’s in-built Over Torque system prevents the user from interrupting the lock while the mechanical parts are in motion.  When the lock registers a certain degree of torque resistance, it will disengage the gearing in order to protect the mechanics. This prevents the lock from damage in the event that a user tries to turn the lock while it is in operation.

Door Adapter Plate™

The Door Adaptor Plate is used to extend the diameter of the Friday Lock from 70mm to 80mm, allowing it to cover a larger area on the door. This enables customers with longer tailpieces to use the lock as it negates the need to shorten an overly-long tailpiece. This means that US consumers will easily be able to install their new Friday Lock over their previous deadbolt, eliminating the need to cut the existing tailpiece.

Clip Release™

The patent pending shell release system allows the user to detach the shell in just five seconds in order to access the battery – simply press the clips by sliding a credit card (or similar plastic card) into the gap between the shell and the door, then gently remove the shell.

Pricing and Availability

Friday Lock is available for pre-order from www.fridaylabs.net in the US, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Friday Lock sells for a suggested retail price of USD$249.00, and will be available on shelves and online from major retailers later this month.

Danalock Unveils New V3 Version

HARLEV, Denmark, May 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Danish smartlock maker, Danalock, announced its new Danalock V3 smartlock loaded with new features and evolutionary innovations. Danalock V3 is the industry’s first smartlock that uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256 encryption providing superior lock-code security. And, in addition to Bluetooth wireless connectivity, Danalock V3 offers Apple Homekit, Zigbee and Z-Wave connectivity for increased versatility. The successor to the company’s V1 and V2 smartlock products, the new Danalock V3 benefits from user feedback in making it easier to install, set up, and use. More speed, more security and leaner design are also some of the new advantages.

“Our Danalock V3 aims for fast and simple installation, intuitive set up, and foolproof operation,” said Henning Overgaard, CEO at Danalock . “This adds significantly to its individual consumer appeal and its benefits for those who plan to use them in quantity,” he added.

Highest Level of Encryption

In today’s environment of heightened security consciousness, it is comforting to know that a smartlock supports the highest encryption level. Danalock V3 uses AES 256 which the U.S. Government said was secure enough to protect “top secret” information.

“Using Danalock V3 gives your lock-code the same degree of protection as U.S. top-secret documents,” Overgaard said. He went on to explain that the lock-code resides in a special TPM-IC which cannot be hacked because the code never leaves the chip.

Remote Access and More

Using Danalock’s smartphone application, one can provide door entry access to anyone from anywhere. In addition, one can arrange to be notified of every access and exit, and by whom. As a user gets closer to home, Danalock V3 becomes aware of impending entry probability. Once the user is within Blueooth range, Danalock V3 can be programmed to automatically open the lock. For example, users carrying armfuls of groceries no longer have to put them down, search for a key, open the door, then return to pick up the groceries.

The operation speed with which Danalock V3 responds to an access code has been improved significantly without any meaningful decrease in battery life. Danalock V3 batteries last about one year in normal operation before needing to be replaced, and the Danalock application provides users with real-time battery charge condition.

Truly International

Entry door locks come in a variety of form factors. In addition, locks may differ significantly from one continent to another. Recognizing this variability, Danalock came up with physical lock implementations that address the differences in lock types. In all cases, one can choose a lock that can be installed in minutes with commonly available tools. Once installed, the setup procedure is identical worldwide.

Price and Delivery

Danalock V3 smartlocks are slated to ship after May 1, 2017. The products can be ordered direct from the company at www.danalock.com. Danalock V3 will be priced at $149 in single quantity. Volume discounts are negotiable.
