Anniversary Update systems getting an update as well

Microsoft rolled out an update for systems running Windows 10 Creators Update last week, and now it turns out that a new update is available for the Anniversary Update as well.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4023680 bumps OS version number to 14393.1230 and includes only a single improvement, with no new features being added. According to the official change log, KB4023680 addresses an issue where End User Defined Characters (EUDC) may not be visible in some applications.

Other than that, there’s nothing in this cumulative update, but Windows 10 users are recommended to download and install it as soon as possible anyway.

Full focus on system improvements

As usual, installing the latest cumulative update brings a system fully up to date, so if you install KB4023680, you also get all the previously-released fixes.

This is one of the reasons cumulative updates are growing up in size with every new release, but Microsoft has recently started publishing delta updates as well, which include only the changes that were introduced since the previous update.

Cumulative updates were previously published on Patch Tuesday with security fixes and other performance improvements, but Microsoft pledged to deliver more such updates to users every month. This second release, however, will only include improvements and nothing more, with security fixes to remain exclusive to Patch Tuesday.

At this point, there are no reports of failed installs with this cumulative update, and Microsoft says that it “is not currently aware of any issues with this update,” but we’ll be keeping an eye out on reports to see if there’s any bug impacting installation.

The Anniversary Update remains the number one Windows 10 version currently in use, despite the arrival of the Creators Update, but this new version is being rolled out in stages to users across the world. It’s just a matter of time until it becomes the most widely-adopted version of the OS, but in the meantime, with so many users still running the Anniversary Update, installing this update is a very important thing to do.
