The Excitement Is Building as Apple Installs WWDC Decorations

June 2, 2017

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, WWDC, is just days away. The conference kicks off Monday, June 5, 2017, and workers have been spotting putting up the WWDC decorations. The McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, is all decked out with WWDC imagery. The decor includes a banner as well as wrappings on lamp posts.

This is the first time that Apple has hosted WWDC away from San Francisco in 13 years, and the decision caught some people by surprise. Cupertino said the reason for the shift was to make things more convenient for participating staff. SFTravel, the organization that runs sales for San Francisco’s Moscone Center, told San Francisco Business Times a different tale, however.

It’s unfortunate that Apple’s WWDC is leaving San Francisco after 13 years. We simply could not provide the amount of time they required to move into the convention center. Most groups in Moscone West setup within three days and Apple needed up to a week. To provide that amount of time would preclude us from booking other groups, which would also affect hotel bookings.

- John Reyes, executive vice president/chief sales officer, SFTravel

WWDC will begin, as is tradition, with what is expected to be an exciting keynote full of new product announcements. Much of Cupertino’s time will likely be spent showcasing new versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. However, we’re predicting Apple to make its first WWDC hardware announcements since 2013.

There’s More to WWDC than WWDC

WWDC Decorations on nearby lampposts and even a transit station remind us that this is more than just one developers conference. A wide variety of other exciting developer events are happening alongside WWDC in San Jose. These include workshops, a design-focused conference for the Apple community, and parties. Jim Dalrymple, of The Loop, will kick the after-hours scene off on Monday, June 5, with Beard Bash 2017. For more information on these and other events, check Apple’s Beyond WWDC page.
