Microsoft has never been much of a hardware company, but the tech giant is hoping to change that in a big way with its revamped Surface line — and the latest jewel in the crown is the Surface Laptop, a new computer set to compete with the likes of the MacBook Pro.
We got our hands on one of the new Surface Laptops for an unboxing and we’re ready to see if it lives up to all the hype.
How does its design stack up to the MacBook Pro? What about the all-important USB ports? And can Microsoft really succeed in the hardware game at this stage?

Todd’s initial impression of the Surface Laptop is good: its design and practicality seem up to par with the MacBook Pro. Andru also gives it a tentative thumbs-up, although he’s still bemoaning the device’s lack of USB C ports, and the fact that it only runs Windows Store apps.
He and Todd both have reservations about the keyboard’s fancy Alcantara fabric covering, but only time will tell if that holds up. Stay tuned for more in-depth reviews of the Surface Laptop as we test out more of its features.
Andru has also been trying out another much-hyped new product: the iPad Pro 10.5 inch, unveiled just a few weeks ago at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference.
His model is loaded up with a demo version of iOS 11, the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, which is coming out in the fall. There are a few notable improvements, including a stellar display thanks to the built-in ProMotion technology. Andru says it’s among the best he’s seen on any device.
