The moment you boot up your Mac for the first time, it becomes fairly obvious what the Messages app is primarily for - iMessage. But little do people know that it has an interesting trick up its sleeve: the ability to add a Google Hangouts account. Yes, you read that right. Even if you don't plan on using iMessage on your Mac, you have the option to add a Google Hangouts account to the Messages app instead. This also means that you can interact with your contacts without having to launch Hangouts in a Web browser at all. Everything will be nicely presented to you in a threaded view, just like how iMessage is.
Tutorial
1. First and foremost launch the Messages app on your Mac. You can either find it in the Dock, or the Launchpad. You can even find it using Spotlight.
2. Now click on the Messages button in the menu bar. Refer to the screenshot below to see what I'm talking about.
3. Now click on Add Account.
4. Select the Google option and then click on Continue.
5. Enter your username and password when prompted for it.
That's it, you're done. You can now start using Hangouts in the Messages app in macOS.

While the Messages app might not offer the experience which the Web version of Hangouts does, but it gets the job done. If you're sticking to sending and receiving just plain text messages then there's very less that can go wrong here.
