Qualcomm Lists The Snapdragon 845 In Its Patent Documents; An Unexpected Surprise From Company’s Apple War

Ramish Zafar

Well folks, today we've got some interesting news for you. If you're a regular follower of the tech world, you'll know that Qualcomm and Apple have been in a patent war for quite a while. Both the companies are tech behemoths and possess a vast amount of resources. Qualcomm claims that Apple's using its technology in certain iPhone models to extend their battery life. And Apple's using all this tech for free. Cupertino on the other hand claims that Qualcomm's patents for which it claims revenues are invalid. All this back and forth has yielded a nice surprise. Take a look below to find out more.

Santa Clara's war with Cupertino also might end up affecting iPhone users. If you'll recall, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were the first smartphones from Apple to feature Intel's modems. While Intel isn't on the same level as Qualcomm for mobile performance, it's a nice head-start for the company. However, as soon as this choice became public, some very interesting rumors also began to come to light.

Qualcomm claims that Apple's deliberately capping its modem speeds on the iPhone to make sure that they match with Intel's. And this might also hold ground for future iPhone launches. Qualcomm's also gone on the offensive, as the US chip giant is seeking ban on certain iPhone imports to the United States. If this materializes, it'll be a big hit for Apple, 40% of whose iPhone revenues are from the homeland.

Now, in a document that's been taken down, Qualcomm has listed the Snapdragon 845. This officially confirms the processor's existence and looks like the company has finalized quite a bit of details for the processor as well. The Snapdragon 845 hasn't surfaced much on the rumor mill, as the processor isn't due for another six months. Some of the earliest rumors for the processor claimed that it will be manufactured on the 7nm process. However, these were refuted later on, as mass production capabilities for the process will unlikely be final for an early 2018 launch.

A detailed specification leak for the processor listed it not with custom cores, as is the current tradition for Qualcomm, but with ARM's offerings. The Snapdragon 845 will feature four Cortex A75 and four Cortex A53 cores, in a traditional big.LITTLE arrangement. That's interesting to note, since the US chip giant is pretty confident for its custom cores. But given the amount of time left until the processor's launch, nothing can be taken as set in stone.
