Back at Computex 2017 in May, AMD announced its new Threadripper processor range and now the company has given price tags, a release date, and a surprise new entry-level addition.
The component vendor confirmed the specs of its professional-grade processors and that the Threadripper 1950X and 1920X will retail at $1,000 and $800 repectively. This info was largely backing up what had been previously leaked, however what was not expected was the Ryzen Threadripper 1900X, a new $500 chip that had been previously unnanounced.
While the 1950X grabbed the headlines when it was announced thanks to its 16 Core setup – a first for the company – the new chip sits at eight cores and sixteen threads, with a 3.8GHz base clock and 4.0GHz boost clock. All three offerings are unlocked for overclocking, support up to 64 PCI Express lanes and up to four channels of DDR4 memory.
As you can probably tell from the specs and pricing, these aren’t going to be for your average gamer or worker. Instead, the Threadripper CPUs are geared up for power users who are going to be working on complex tasks like 3D rendering and video encoding.
In terms of availability, the more expensive chips are hitting shelves on August 10th, with the more affordable 1900X launching at the end of the month. Pre-orders start from today.
