Microsoft Races Forward to Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16278

As promised, Microsoft is accelerating the release of Windows 10 Insider Preview builds just ahead of the completion of the Fall Creators Update. Today, it has released build 16278, just four days after it delivered build 16275.

“Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16278 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring only (not Skip Ahead),” Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar explained. “We are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we intend to release new builds to Insiders more quickly and that these builds will include mostly bug fixes. You’ll notice that this build continues to include a bunch of good bug fixes Insiders will enjoy.”

Microsoft still isn’t documenting known issues—I smell a cover-up—but here’s what it says is fixed in this build. (Excuse the copy/paste.)

 • We fixed an issue where upgrading to recent flights would fail if you had a speech for a secondary language installed.
 • We fixed an issue where printing from 32-bit apps running on 64-bit versions of the OS was broken when using v3 print drivers on recent builds.
 • The ability to take HDR screenshots on your PC via the Xbox app has been removed starting with this build. We plan to re-introduce this feature again in the future.
 • We fixed an issue resulting in drag and drop onto websites intermittently not working in Microsoft Edge.
 • We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge would crash after choosing to pin certain websites to Start.
 • We fixed an issue where a tab in Microsoft Edge could get in a state where it displayed a tab preview thumbnail even though your mouse wasn’t hovering over the tab.
 • We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge for certain websites where after watching an embedded video full screen then using Esc to return to the page would result in the video controller no longer being visible.
 • We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge where pasting an image to Imgur.com from your clipboard wouldn’t work.
 • We fixed an issue where the Emoji Panel’s tooltips could become mixed up.
 • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in precision touchpads potentially dropping gestures after coming out of sleep.
 • We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might incorrectly show “PC not charging” while the device was changing in recent builds.
 • We fixed an issue where fonts using shortcuts would become unusable and disappear from the Fonts folder.
 • We fixed an issue resulting in multiple apps crashing in the previous flight if you tried to log into the app using Facebook.
 • We fixed and issue where Delivery Optimization Group Policy / MDM policy for DOMinFileSizeToCache was ignored and the service defaults were used instead.

When the heck does Skip Ahead, skip ahead?? I feel like the fast lane is moving pretty slow.

They are actually documenting known issues..just after the fact ;)

In reply to SvenJ:

Actually the whole point of Skip Ahead was to "skip" the stabilization of RS3 and be among the first to receive RS4 builds which will happen… eventually and at a much slower pace since they are only at the beginning of the development.

In reply to jd80: I think you're right that the whole point of "Skip Ahead" was to allow Insiders to skip the stabilization builds of RS3, and be among the first to receive RS4 builds. But when I signed up for "Skip Ahead", I was under the impression that RS3 builds would stop, and that I would immediately start getting RS4 builds. Since apparently being accepted in "Skip Ahead", I've received zero RS4 builds, and only one of the (I think three) RS3 builds that have been released. Seems to be another case of Microsoft not explaining their intent very well. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone at Microsoft even knows what their intent is.

In reply to CompUser:

What part of this, from Paul on Aug 23 (just a week ago), quoting Dona Sarkar, isn't clear?

“For Insiders who joined Skip Ahead, we will continue to release builds from the RSPRERELEASE branch but they won’t be released at the same pace as builds from RS3RELEASE,” Ms. Sarkar says. “Since we are just now beginning development for RS4, Insiders will soon notice a jump in build numbers just like we did early in RS3. Also because we are just beginning development for RS4, Insiders shouldn’t expect to see a lot of big changes or new features just yet.”

In reply to chrisrut: What part of that implies we would stop seeing updates altogether? If they weren't going to release any rs4 builds before rs3 'ships', just rs3 polishes, what is the point of skip ahead?
