Apple’s 2017 Phone Lineup To Be Called iPhone Edition, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus

The next iPhone is due to be announced during the media event that Apple has already invited the media to attend on September 12th, and it is sure to be a big day for the iPhone as a whole, but as it turns out, the iPhone 8 might not be what we thought after all.

That is because according to a new report by 9to5Mac, Apple’s lineup for the event in just over a week’s time will not be 4.7-inch iPhone 7s, 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus, and 5.8-inch iPhone 8 at all.

The iPhone that has become known as the iPhone 8, the one with the newly designed chassis and a bezel-less 5.8-inch OLED display that goes on for days is without doubt the handset that everyone will be looking out for come September 12th, but the report cites multiple case makers when saying that the flagship release will actually be sold as the iPhone Edition, with the others called the iPhone 8 (4.7-inch) and iPhone 8 Plus (5.5-inch).

That, of course, makes plenty of sense when you think about it. With the biggest and baddest iPhone of them all being called the iPhone 8, Apple’s equally new iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus stand little to no chance of being accepted as high-end smartphones thanks to that “7” in their name when there is already an iPhone 8 available alongside it. In an attempt to avoid the new iPhones seeming old hat almost immediately thanks to their designation, it would make good business sense to skip the iPhone 7s name altogether, and if 9to5Mac’s sources are correct, that is what will be happening.

Of course, this is not the first time the iPhone Edition name has been suggested, with the usually reliable MacOtakara using the same name when describing the highest of high-end iPhones all the way back in March.

Apple already has a history of using the Edition moniker in its Apple Watch line, and the move to offer a similar option in the iPhone line looks more and more likely.
