It was rumored many months ago that Microsoft was working on a “mini” variant of its Surface tablet. The company had such a tablet in the pipeline but it never ended up releasing it. The project was shelved for reasons best known to Microsoft. Some images of the Surface Mini were leaked online earlier this year and additional images have now surfaced giving us a good look at the canceled tablet.
The leaked marketing images for the Surface Mini come from Evan Blass aka @evleaks. They reveal that the Surface Mini would have had a 7.5 inch 1440×1080 pixel resolution display.
It would have been powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The company was thinking of offering it in black, red, and blue colors.
Microsoft was reportedly going to launch the Surface Mini tablet alongside the Surface Pro 3 at its hardware event in May 2014.
However, it was reported soon after the Surface Pro 3 was announced that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop had decided to cancel the Surface Mini project weeks before the tablet’s launch.
It’s unclear if Microsoft is ever going to make a “mini” variant of its Surface tablets in the future. Given that it gave up on a similar project pretty late into the game, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the company try its hand at something like this again in the near future.
