Intel will take last orders for its WiGig line in September and make final shipments in December.

The technology has never taken off in mobile devices, possibly because of its short range – about 30 foot -.and requirement for line-of-sight for connectivity. The signal can’t go through walls.

Intel will still develop 60GHz 802.11ad parts which can deliver 4.8Gbit/s for use in VR head-sets and has a deal with Vive to do this.

Despite the promise of WiGig, WiFi remains the standard means for wireless data transmission.

Intel says: “We remain committed to WiGig and think it has exciting potential for a number of applications, including enabling VR to become wireless, mesh networking and as part of Intel’s leading products for 5G.”
