iPhone Launch: 14 Apple Announcements you Probably Missed

Jonny Evans

Watching Apple since 1999. I don't say what they should do. I say what they might do. They sometimes do.

  1. Well spotted. And I missed the AppleCare increase, though I was looking for it. That makes the iPhone Upgrade Program for the iPhone X a better deal. I may be missing something, and also may be an edge use case, but the iTunes upgrade is a big downgrade for me. I have dozens, in some case hundreds of apps on some of my iOS devices. Trying to re/organize them by page and folder on the device itself is a nightmare — I used to be able to do that fairly easily from iTunes. And when it’s time to update all those apps, I used to be able to do it once on a Mac, and then sync multiple devices to it, which was going to have to happen anyway for backups (encrypted local backups on redundant local storage, no 128-256GB per device iCloud backups, thanks). Now I have to update each and every device individually wirelessly or using cellular data, which is a huge waste of bandwidth. Same goes for wipe and restores. Not good. The least they could have done is split the iOS App Store functionality in iTunes into a separate MacOS app, or grafted it onto the MacOS App Store.

Hmm. I am looking again at my 6S plus, and thinking, “Self, this such a nice well engineered product, all I have to do is download iOS 11 for free, and I’m set. Also, I really enjoy using my new iPad Pro 12.9. Thank you Apple.”
