While the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus pack a ton of power and advanced new technologies into Apple’s standard 4.7- and 5.5-inch form-factors, it’s the company’s completely redesigned iPhone X — and particularly its massive, 5.8-inch OLED display — that’s become the talk of the town lately. After all, it’s a gorgeous, pixel-dense, and technologically advanced panel, built on Samsung’s industry-leading Super AMOLED technology, and rebranded exclusively for Apple as ‘Super Retina’.

Along with the 4.7- and 5.5-inch LED/LCD panels on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X’ 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display boasts a number of Apple’s cutting-edge innovations, including True Tone, 3D Touch, and P3 Wide-Color technology. “But are they be compatible with Apple’s Pencil?”

Does Apple Pencil Work on iPhone 8 or X?

While it would certainly be nice to see the Apple Pencil be able to interact with a much smaller canvas like the iPhone’s one day, unfortunately, even Apple’s latest flagship models lack the component framework necessary to support it.

No, Apple Pencil does not work with iPhone 8 or X.

Now, there is a bit of silver lining for those who fancy the thought of navigating their iPhones with a stylus. Not only has Apple been exploring the idea of creating one, but there are also a ton of other options already on the market. Granted, these offerings from companies like Adonit, Paper, and Wacom aren’t nearly as advanced as the Apple Pencil; however they should still get the job done until Apple gets around to doing it magically.

How Apple Pencil Works

In the absolute simplest terms: Apple’s 9.7-, 10.5-, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models are equipped with a thin layer of electromagnetically-charged film underneath their display, which enables Apple Pencil functionality by detecting input elements from the stylus’ precision tip — such as pressure/force, angle, or speed. It’s a two part system, in other words, that allows Apple Pencil to communicate with iPad Pro via Bluetooth, utilizing an ultra low-power ARM-based M3 chip, a 3-Axis accelerometer, and other advanced components to churn out buttery-smooth digital ink on those massive iPad displays.
