Some of the most popular smartphones have been put through a battery speed test

Smartphone makers might not be able to extend the life of their batteries but they can make them recharge in super-quick time.

, Samsung, HTC and OnePlus have all launched devices with fast charging, which claims to boost the power at a much quicker rate.

In fact, OnePlus is boasting its new OnePlus 5 can go from zero to fully refilled in just over an hour.

So are these claims true and which phone can really be charged the quickest?

To find out, YouTuber Danny Winget, put the new iPhone 8, HTC U11, Galaxy Note 8 and OnePlus 5 through a quick charge test.

Tech blogger tests the iPhone 8 Plus' charging speed

Using official plugs and cables he checked to see how much power each device had in the tank after 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes and one hour of charge times.

All the phones performed well with only the Note 8 having less than 50% of charge after 30 minutes.

However, after the 60 minutes was up there was a clear winner and it comes from the phone that costs the least.

After an hour connected to its special Dash Charger, the OnePlus 5 had 96 per cent of battery.

In second place was the HTC U11 with 85 per cent power, followed closely by the iPhone 8 with 82 per cent.

Coming in last was the Note 8 which only managed to get to 69 per cent after one hour in the plug.

It's worth noting that not only did the OnePlus 5 win but it also charged the fastest with a plug that comes as standard in the box.

The iPhone 8 doesn't come with a fast charging power unit with this needing to be purchased separately.

One caveat in this test is that, unlike all the other phones, the iPhone 8 wasn't placed in airplane mode.

This is unlikely to make a huge amount of difference but you may get an extra couple of per cent by turning off its mobile and Wi-Fi features.

So, the OnePlus is the clear winner in the battle of the batteries but there is one thing it can't do - charge wirelessly.

The iPhone 8 and Note 8 can both be refilled by simply being placed on a Qi charging mat with .
