We answer your questions about iPhone X

LOS ANGELES — You've got lots of questions about the new Apple iPhone X, which will be released Friday at 8 a.m. 

You've posed them to us on social media — so let's dive in and answer them. 

First, a quick primer: The iPhone X is Apple’s new flagship 10th anniversary phone, the first re-designed phone since 2014’s iPhone 6. It features facial recognition to unlock the screen, an edge to edge 5.8-inch OLED screen, promising richer blacks and colors, and the ability to make animated emojis based on your expressions.

The iPhone X went on pre-sale Friday morning and quickly sold out its initial shipment. Deliveries for current orders are promised within 5-6 weeks. Apple says it will have some inventory Friday at retail, but due to production issues, the company is expected to have fewer units available than usual. The best way to ensure getting the product is to pre-order, either via the Apple Store app, or online at Apple.com or via third-party re-sellers like the wireless carriers.

The iPhone X starts at $999, vs. $699 for the iPhone 8, the other new phone Apple released this year, in September.

Now onto the questions:

• Ariel Keller: “Should I stick with the 8 or get the 10?” That’s a personal choice, and up to you. The 8 is a classic iPhone that works like other models in the past. It has a faster processor, a glass back and if you get the step-up premium Plus edition, software enhancements on the camera that are fun for photographers to play with.

• Roger Daniel: "Will there be an X Plus?" Apple hasn’t announced one at this point. But who knows?

• Rebecca Navarro-Vomas: “Will the charger be different with the X?” No, it’s the same lightning charger we’ve been using the past few years. Both the X and 8 can also be charged wirelessly, with the addition of wireless chargers from Belkin and Mophie.

• Harjeet Singh: "What's the price?" The X starts at $999 with 64 GB of storage, and I recommend stepping up to the next level, $1,149 and 256 GB of storage. Shoot a lot of 4K videos and download apps, and storage adds up quick. On my 8 Plus review unit, I’m up to 120 GB already.

• Brandon Barton: "Is the X waterproof?" The phone is water-resistant, like the 8 and 7. I wouldn't go swimming with it. 

• Gary Moskowitz: "What's the size of the iPhone X?" That would be 5.8 inches, the largest screen size ever for an iPhone. The iPhone 8 Plus is 5.5 inches.

• Amy Howorth: "Is the iPhone X camera the best one to date?" Yes and no. It’s basically the same as the 8, but with two minor differences. You can shoot Selfies in Portrait mode, and blur the background, and the second, portrait lens that we met on the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus has a faster lens opening on the X, 2.4 vs. 2.8.

Finally, Shelbie-Lynn Welbie asked about upgrading from the 7 Plus to the 8 Plus. What are the benefits?

Well Shelbie, the 7 Plus and 8 Plus are virtually identical, except for the ability to do wireless charging, the new glass back, more powerful chip and enhanced camera. In my back to back tests of the cameras, it was hard to see major differences between the two, but the 8 Plus did end up coming out on top with more pleasing photos. Should you make the upgrade? I’d hold out and wait to see the reviews for the iPhone X, which will be out any day.
