We Don't Need No Stinkin' Battery Features - Apple Releases iOS 11.2.5 Public Beta 6

The little beta that could.

Update: With new chaiOS bug fix, release date info.

Hot on the tail of Tim Cook's big interview, iOS 11.2.5 Public Beta 6 has been released. This release fulfills absolutely zero of Cook's promises of new battery features.

Put down the pitchforks! It's not supposed to. As I mentioned before, iOS 11.2.5 is a victim of unfortunate timing. Despite a couple of interesting features like on-demand news podcasts from Siri, this iOS release is focused on stability, setting the stage for bigger releases next month. It will also include a fix for the chaiOS Messages bug that reared its ugly head again this week (much to the delight of evil iOS pranksters).

Next month's release should be a doozy. Based on Cook's interview, Apple should expect a large influx of testers to the Public Beta program as they begin the beta for iOS 11.3. That release will contain the rumored battery features that have been haunting iOS 11.2.5 for the past couple of months.

Surprisingly, the "new feature" will likely come in the form of being able to see and disable the old "feature" that's hidden in the base code of iOS. I do hope it's more than that, though, and unmasking the battery health feature will let us actually see how our batteries are performing. If all it turns out to be is an iOS setting that gives you a scary warning when disabled about how you'll end up stranded in the middle of nowhere because you turned this feature off and your iPhone died as a result...well that's less than optimal. On the other hand, I'll be curious to see if people that turn off the battery saver feature do experience more unexpected shutdowns (similar to the 30% battery bug that cropped up last year).

Suffice to say, next month will be very interesting in iOS 11 beta land. This month? Kinda dull. But at least we're at the end of the cycle. Based on Apple stating that they would include a fix for the chaiOS bug in a "software update" next week, it's safe to say this really will be the last beta before the public release.

So get to downloading and I'll see you back here in a couple of weeks.
