Yes, you can play Spotify on HomePod

Watching Apple since 1999. I don't say what they should do. I say what they might do. They sometimes do.

I think the criticism is that they want to have HomePod direct connect to Spotify etc as in: “Hey Siri connect to my Spotify account and play . . .” rather than connect my iPhone to HomePod and stream through my device.
I suspect it is a security thing on Apple’s side.
    Just a thought.

We call it AirPlay? May the HomePod is not equipped with AirPlay 2 (for Multiroom) but why AirPlay 1 shouldn’t work? The Reviews talking about a closed Ecosystem are talking about playing other Services _without_ the need of a iPhone or extra iOS Device?!

That direct control of third-party apps (like Spotify) and other new features, are likely coming in future updates.

Remember that this is a first generation product, and like most of Apple’s other first gen products, the version of iOS running in the HomePod is limited.

For example, no one would say that you can’t do much with the iPhone, but the first generation iPhone in 2007 was extremely limited in what it could do. There was no app store or apps, so you were stuck with the limited apps that Apple supplied with the iPhone, and you needed a Mac to configure the first iPhone.
