debuted at Mobile World Congress last weekend.

The all-new flagship smartphone boasts a redesigned Dual Pixel rear camera with a variable aperture to improve shots in tough low-light conditions.

The Galaxy S9 range also boasts a super slow-motion mode, which can shoot up to 960 frames-per-second for short bursts.

Galaxy S9+ owners will also benefit from a dual-camera system on the back of the phone for Live Focus, a feature which enables users to add an artificial bokeh blur to the background of portrait shots.

Samsung has also included a quirky new feature, dubbed AR Emoji, which lets Galaxy S9 owners animate a cartoon version of themselves.

Underneath the bonnet is the top-of-the-range Exynos 9810, which offers faster speeds and greater power efficiency.

This is coupled with 4GB of RAM in the Galaxy S9, and 6GB of RAM in the larger Galaxy S9+.

But despite these flagship specifications, the latest benchmark tests performed by technology blog AnandTech suggest the iPhone 7 tops the latest from Samsung in certain categories.

AnandTech tested a Galaxy S9 model powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 chip, and described the results as “awkward”.

Not only did the iPhone 8 and iPhone X beat the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in every test in which they were compared, but in three of the tests, the latest Samsung handset was also bested by the iPhone 7.

Apple debuted its iPhone 7 back in 2016.

The smartphone is powered by Apple’s own in-house A10 Fusion chipset, coupled with 2GB of RAM.

According to Andrei Frumusanu, who conducted the tests for AnandTech, the results of these benchmarks tests suggests something is wrong with the chip.

Samsung told the publication that a firmware issue could be to blame, but Frumusanu isn’t sure he buys this.

He notes: “One of the Samsung spokesmen confirmed to me that the demo unit were running special firmware for MWC and that they might not be optimised.

“I’m having a bit of a hard time believing they would so drastically limit the performance of the device for the show demo units and less so that they would mess around with the scheduler settings.”

Hopefully, the result of the test is an anomaly.

Andrei Frumusanu adds: “Fingers crossed, today’s results are not representative of shipping product as that would otherwise be an utterly massive disappointment.”
