The Patch Tuesday rollout will begin soon

Microsoft is getting ready to begin another Patch Tuesday rollout that would bring security fixes for its software, and just like every month, Windows 10 is projected to receive cumulative updates as well.

For Windows 10 users, cumulative updates are particularly critical because they bring a computer fully up-to-date when installed. Deploying the most recent cumulative update patches all the known issues, as all the previously released fixes are included.

This is the reason cumulative updates are growing in size with every release, but Microsoft is also shipping delta updates, which include all the changes made from the previous update and are exclusively released for systems already up-to-date.

This month’s Patch Tuesday cycle will bring cumulative updates for all Windows 10 versions, though it’s worth mentioning that the original release (10240) and the November Update (version 1511) no longer receive support for home users, but only as part of the LTSB branch.

Issues with cumulative updates

Recently, Microsoft released cumulative update KB4090913 for computers running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, as well as KB4092077 for those on the Windows 10 Creators Update. New updates including these changes as well as more security fixes will be shipped on this month’s Patch Tuesday too.

As with every new update, Microsoft recommends customers to install the patches as soon as possible, though some have learned the hard way that it’s better not to hurry and wait to see if any issue is being reported. Cumulative updates, in particular, have caused headaches to Windows 10 users, as some of them failed to install or produced other issues after installation.

It remains to be seen how smooth the experience is going to be this month, but we’ll be keeping an eye on reports and post new info if any problems occur. IT admins should be aware that system reboots will be required when the new updates ship, so saving work and creating backups should be on tomorrow’s agenda.
