Report: AMD Navi Won’t Be A High-End GPU Chip, Will Roll Replace RX 580, 7nm Vega Not For Gaming

AMD Navi GPUs are expected to launch next year and many speculate that AMD will be taking Nvidia head-on with its Navi architecture.

AMD Navi GPUs are expected to launch next year and many speculate that AMD will be taking Nvidia head-on with its Navi architecture, however, reportedly AMD has decided not to design any high-end GPUs with its Nvai architecture.

The report comes from Fudzilla, who claim that AMD Navi 7nm chip will not be used to design any high-end GPU and will be a mainstream chip focussing on performance and will be rolling out into the market in 2019.

According to the report, the AMD Navi will be sort of a replacement for Radeon RX 580 and RX 480 and the performance will be on par with 14nm Vega chip.

The report suggests that AMD Navi GPU’s performance will be on par with a GTX 1080 but don’t expect Navi to go head-to-head with the likes of Nvidia Titan series GPUs or GTX 1080 Ti.

Furthermore, the Vega 7nm chip is not a GPU chip at all and probably will never make into one.

This was confirmed at AMD’s January technology gig and at the time it was considered that eventually, AMD would bring the 7nm Vega to GPUs, however, that is not the case as no GPU in the AMD’s roadmap suggests that it would be using the 7nm Vega chip.

Also, AMD has confirmed that it has pulled some of the members of Zen micro-architecture team to its Radeon Graphics department to give its upcoming GPUs a boost in power and performance.

Suzanne Plummer, CVP of the Radeon Technologies Group confirmed that AMD is using the process that went into the success of Ryzen CPUs to give its upcoming AMD Radeon GPUs a boost in performance.

Not only that, AMD is already working on Zen 5 Micro-Architecture. According to lead Zen architect Mike Clark, he is working on Zen 5 mico-architecture.

What do you think of AMD Navi not being a high-end GPU chip? Let us know in the comments.
