Apple To Refund $50 Against Full-Price iPhone Battery Replacements Made In 2017

Apple already offers replacement batteries at a discount for iPhones that suffer from the much publicized CPU throttling as a result of bad batteries and now the company is going one step further.

Now, anyone who paid for an out-of-warranty battery replacement in 2017 and who would have been affected by the performance throttling brought on by iOS 10.2.1 can receive a refund of $50.

The offer applies to iPhone 6 and newer devices, just as the existing $29 battery upgrade program does. The previous price for a new battery was $79, meaning the $50 refund will mean earlier buyers will effectively have paid the same as they would if they walked into an Apple Store to buy a new battery today.

This whole situation came about after it became clear that Apple was reducing the processing power of iPhones that had poorly performing batteries inside them. As a result of being unable to provide enough power to keep the iPhones running at full pelt, iOS 10.2.1 reduced the top end performance of the devices, making then run more slowly. Apple subsequently offered discounted battery replacements for impacted devices, giving those iPhones their original performance characteristics back as a result.

Apple says that it will issue $50 refunds to anyone who bought a new battery from an Apple Store, Apple Repair Center, or Authroized Reseller. If you bought a battery from anywhere else, then you should obviously not expect a refund.

If you’re carrying around an iPhone that is suffering from this battery-related performance slowdown, then you still have plenty of time to get your discounted battery. Apple will continue to offer $29 battery replacements through the end of 2018.
