watchOS 5 unsupported on original Apple Watch
Apple has shared the hardware requirements for watchOS 5 following the reveal of the software on Monday, announcing that the first generation Apple Watch will be unsupported, effectively killing the “Series 0”, including the $10,000-$17,000 Apple Watch Edition models.
The original Apple Watch has received just under three and a half years of software releases since the weareable was launched in 2015. Although this marks the end of the road for the first Apple Watch, watchOS 5 is supported on all other Apple Watch models.
watchOS 5 adds plenty of new features for health and fitness tracking. Asides from adding new workout types for yoga activities and hiking, you can now challenge your friends to activity competitions up to seven days in length. watchOS 5 includes a new workout tracking mode that allows Apple Watch to track an activity when it detects that you might be working out. Inversely it also allows Apple Watch to stop tracking the activity when it detects you have stopped working out. You will also be able to see more detailed information such as rolling mile times and pace reminders.
Apple has also incorporated a new way to communicate with other Apple Watch users. The new feature, walkie-talkie, pretty much speaks for itself. You push a button on-sceen, speak, wait for the noise of someone communicating back.
