Website favicons have finally returned to Safari in macOS Mojave. The teeny-tiny icons, which make it easier to distinguish between sites in open tabs, are also coming to iPhone and iPad for the very first time with iOS 12.
Favicons are supported by almost all of the biggest web browsers. They’re the small icons that appear alongside website titles in your tabs, and they make it easier to find the site you want when you have a whole bunch open at once.
These icons are particularly useful to those who spend their days inside a web browser, but they’ve been missing from Safari in recent macOS releases. Apple has never gotten around to bringing them to iOS, either. But that all changes this fall.
Favicons are back, baby!
Safari 12, which ships with macOS Mojave and iOS 12, finally brings back support for favicons. On your Mac, they will appear in the URL bar, on tabs, in window titles, and alongside bookmarks. On your iPhone or iPad, you’ll see them in tabs only.

And you may not need to upgrade to Mojave to get your hands on them. Safari 12 will also be available to download on machines running Sierra and High Sierra, so you should see them there after updating your browser this fall.
Sadly, there is no way to update Safari on iOS without updating iOS itself.
