Google Brain Has Expanded To Amsterdam

This article is more than 5 years old.

Google has expanded Google Brain to Amsterdam in a bid to bolster the division's artificial intelligence research efforts.

Google Brain is based out of Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, but it has satellite teams around the world.

Google Brain research scientist Nal Kalchbrenner, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: "Exciting news: Google Brain expands to Amsterdam."

Kalchbrenner added that he was looking forward to working on "core AI challenges" with researchers across Google and beyond.

Google Brain was founded in 2010 by Google Fellow Jeff Dean and visiting Stanford Professor Andrew Ng, who now works for Chinese tech giant Baidu. The group's mission is "to make machines intelligent and improve people's lives."

The Google Brain Amsterdam team will sit within Google's existing Amsterdam office, where waffles hang from the ceiling.

Google is looking for people to join the new Google Brain team, with a research scientist position posted on Google's Careers site.

"Researchers on the Google Brain team have the freedom to set their research agenda and to engage as much or as little as they wish with existing products, choosing between doing more basic, methodological research or more applied research as necessary to produce the most compelling results," the job posting reads.

A Google spokesperson said: "A small group of researchers is joining Google AI in Amsterdam. They are working from our Google Amsterdam office (so not a specific Google Brain location). The Google office in Amsterdam houses about 250 employees, in roles ranging from Cloud engineering to marketing.

"In general, the primary driver for our choice of AI research office locations is the availability of talent who are either already living in the area or would be attracted to move there. Aside from that it is the usual factors, such as strength of local academic institutions, business friendly environment and good transport infrastructure. We think that with world-class universities and a thriving developer community, Europe is well positioned to play a leading role in AI research and application."
