Dell is upgrading its rugged laptop collection with a pair of new laptops designed for law enforcement and military computer users.

Designed to "withstand the harshest conditions" including extreme temperatures, the Latitude E6420 XFR and Latitude E6420 ATG share several of the same specs:

  • 14-inch HD WLED resistive touch screen displays that are sunlight-readable and respond with gloves on
  • Intel Core i7/i5/i3 processor options
  • Integrated or discrete 512MB graphics
  • 6-, 9- and 12-cell battery options
  • Optional hot-swappable media bay battery

The Latitude E6420 XFR stands out as it has passed a 6-foot MIL-STD transit drop test, and it can survive 4- and 5-foot drops up to 78 times on average.

Additionally, both machines are outfitted with Dell's new Mobile Video Evidence Management program, which allows users to wirelessly upload evidence from a patrol vehicle to a central repository, and the Mobile Digital Forensics service, which automatically scans data (including certain deleted files) on computers and mobile devices.

Both machines are available for purchase immediately. Pricing starts at $1,949 for the Latitude E6420 ATG and jumps to $6,200 for the Latitude XFR 6420.
