Corning, the maker of ultra-strong Gorilla Glass, will debut Gorilla Glass 2 at next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the company announced Thursday.

The details are scant thus far, but it appears the company believes the second version will pave the way for thinner tablets and smartphones.

"Corning Gorilla Glass has been a tremendous success for Corning, enjoying excellent market acceptance across mobile device industries," Corning's senior vice president and general manager, James Steiner, said in a statement. "Handset and tablet device manufacturers are clearly driving toward higher functionality from thinner designs. Corning's latest innovation in Gorilla Glass technology is very well positioned to meet these challenges and enable broader touch technology penetration."

Full details will come to light next week at CES. Corning will also show off an 82-inch touch screen LCD, demonstrating that Gorilla Glass could be used in much larger formats.

The company in October announced Lotus Glass, a new material to be used in LCD and OLED screens. The company boasted that it offers a high-resolution display without sucking up too much power. Like the second iteration of Gorilla Glass, Lotus Glass should allow for thinner devices.

Gorilla Glass is used in a multitude of smartphones and tablets; Corning's clients reportedly include Apple.
