Lytro light field camera starts shipping

The startup Lytro started shipping their new camera today. The Lytro camera features the ability to manipulate photos after they've been taken. The big feature is to change the focus of the image after the fact, but future changes such as 3D effects may be possible. Basically the camera captures raw data, which can be adjusted either with computer software or a Web interface.

The photos are best intended for online sharing, as once they've been exported from a computer, they lose the interactive abilities. The images are also relatively small with an exported resolution of only about 1 megapixel. The size and interactivity thus makes it ideal for sharing with social media networks.

The camera comes in 8 GB and 16 GB versions that can take up to 350 or 750 pictures. Pricing is $399 and $499. Current orders have an expected ship date of April to May.
