Corel Releases First HTML5-Capable Video-Editing Software

Corel's new VideoStudio X5 not only can create HTML5 video, but can record screen activity and speeds up performance with multit-threading.

March 7, 2012

Corel makes one of the more appealing video editors around, VideoStudio Pro, and today the company announced the availability of the latest version of this enthusiast video-editing software, VideoStudio Pro X5.

The new version adds something you won't find in any other product: The ability to generate HTML5-ready output. It also lets users record activity on their computer screens. The $79.99 application now lets users include up to 21 tracks in their movie projects, and uses multi-threading to take advantage of today's multi-core CPUs for better performance.

In fact, Corel's senior product marketing manager, Greg Wood, told PCMag that a 10-track movie saw a tenfold performance improvement.

But the big news is the program's ability to generate HTML5 video content. Included authoring capabilites let users add clickable points on the Web video, such as cue points or video chapters. The software outputs to either H.264 or WebM formats. This means the video will display correctly in any browser that supports HTML, including the Apple iPad and iPhone's version of the Safari Web browser.

"Consumers have come to appreciate VideoStudio Pro for its uncomplicated approach to movie making, speed and impressive creative effects," said Jan Piros, senior product manager of Digital Media at Corel. "With VideoStudio Pro X5, we've furthered our commitment to overall performance and innovation by offering powerful new features and category-crossing tools like screen recording and HTML5. From YouTubers and home video editors, to small business owners and educators, VideoStudio Pro X5 enables a wide range of possibilities in video."

Another new feature in VideoStudio X5 is the ability to import multi-layered graphics from Corel's PaintShop Pro image-editing software, with each layer becoming a track. It can also now import 3D video in MPO or MVC format, and now supports 50p/60p video from cameras that use those formats.

Also announced today is VideoStudio Pro Ultimate ($99.99, $79.99 upgrade), which includes plug-ins from proDAD, Boris, and NewBlue, for things like high-end titling, stabilization, and other pro-level effects.

Both products are available for download purchase at corel.com starting today. And look for an updated review of Corel VideoStudio Pro X5 on PCMag in the coming days.
