New Apple TV goes full HD

By

Despite all the rumours, Apple has introduced a new version of the Apple TV, not a standalone TV.

The headline features of the new Apple TV are support for 1080p content and a revised user interface.

The new Apple TV costs $109, and goes on sale a week tomorrow, March 16, alongside the new iPad.

It can play iTunes Store content at up to 1080p, and also plays YouTube and Vimeo content. Additional content such as Major League Baseball and National Hockey League matches are available on subscription in some markets.

AirPlay support allows music, photos and videos to be streamed directly from iOS devices, and AirPlay Mirroring is available to mirror an iPad (but not iPad 1) or iPhone 4S display on an HDTV.

"People are going to love streaming movies and TV shows in 1080p with the new Apple TV, and photos look beautiful displayed at the maximum resolution of your TV," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "Apple TV is easier than ever to use with its new icon-based interface and the ability to access your purchased movies, TV shows and music right from iCloud."
