Apple's 'Post-PC' Era Hailed Amid New iPad Launch

The boss of Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) has revealed the latest iPad model and said the product will dominate the "post-PC" era.

Speaking at the launch venue in San Francisco, CEO Tim Cook said: "We are taking it to a whole new level and are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad.

"Apple is at the forefront of this revolution. Apple has its feet fully planted in the post-PC future."

He said the era is now dominated by the iPad and other Apple products - and revealed that Apple sold 172 million devices last year.

The market was spread between iPods, iPhones and iPads, and now account for 76% of Apple sales.

Mr Cook added: "The momentum behind (the) iPad has been incredible and has surprised just about everyone."

He said Apple shipped more iPads in the last three months of 2011 than any PC model range sold by another manufacturer.

The company sold 15.43 million iPads in that quarter, to bring the total units sold to 55 million.

The third generation iPad unveiled at the event is due to go on sale next week.

It has a sharper screen, a faster processor and an option for faster wireless broadband access.

Apple also revealed it will start letting users store movies on its iCloud remote storage service.

This will give customers access to movies from PCs, iPhones and other Apple devices through the Internet.

However, the lack of any really headline-grabbing advancements left some slightly sceptical that Apple had done enough to maintain its leading position in the market.

"While the hardware is notably enhanced, with an impressive retina display, better camera and faster processor, there are still some areas of improvement that Apple needs to work on, in order to stay ahead of its encroaching competitors," said Fred Huet, managing partner at Greenwich Consulting.

"As tablets are increasingly being used for personal media consumption, it is promising to see a better screen resolution. But will this be enough to ensure Apple's competitive lead in the marketplace? No."
