With its brilliant Retina display, the new iPad is a good choice for consumers looking to buy a new tablet — at least for those who can afford the $500 asking price for the introductory model and don’t mind Apple calling the shots when it comes to how they transfer their files, according to a recent InformationWeek tablet comparison.

The Asus Transormer Pad Infinity is iPad’s most comparable Android-based competitor, but the new tablet will cot $100 more than the iPad, and so far has no release date. However, Android-based tablets do have an advantage over the iPad in that they allow users to move files to and from the device any way they like.

The Transformer Pad includes a microSD slot and USB port – while Apple requires customers to use iCloud and iTunes for this purpose. Additionally, Android apps can be sold in Google’s store without the approval, while Apple requires approval for the sale of its iOS apps.

The report also notes that the iPad 2 is still a great option, especially for people who want a tablet for their kids, as the new iPad’s 2048-by-1536 pixel screen is overkill if the purpose of the tablet is just to play games. And now $100 has bee knocked off the pricetag of the basic model of the iPad 2, and sites like eBay and Amazon will no doubt be flooded with previously-owned devices being sold by iPad users upgraded to the new iPad.

However, business people who travel and need to make presentations or transfer large files may appreciate the new model’s 4G capabilities and vivid screen, and adults who want to use a tablet mainly for reading or games with three-dimensional graphics may want that Retina display.
