Bethesda Is Developing a Game for the iPad or iPhone

This article is more than 10 years old.

Soon, players may have a chance to wander the barren post-apocalyptic wastelands of Fallout or the lush, fantastic landscape of Elder Scrolls even as they wander the streets of their own neighborhood. A new job posting from Bethesda games looking for iOS programmers confirms that they’re looking to make games for the iPad or the iPhone.

Especially considering that this job is being posted so soon after the announcement of the iPad3, it isn’t too much of a leap to think that the developers who made their name with massive,open-world PC and console titles are going to try their hand at Apple’s powerful new device.

Even as the mobile gaming world explodes with new titles and ideas, the gulf between iOS and consoles remains fairly large. It will be interesting to see what a company bred on an experience so far from mobile will be able to do with the new technology.

The first time I played Fallout 3, I was actually in Washington DC, and the bizarre disconnect that came from jogging past real landmarks I had seen virtually destroyed and overrun with super mutants was both jarring and fascinating. Some GPS-enabled or real-world elements could go a long way to enhancing Bethesda’s concept of the massive open world: the real world, after all, is pretty big.

Bethesda is specifically looking for Apple fanboys. “Follows live blogs of every Apple event a plus.”

I just hope it works out a little bit better than Mass Effect: Infiltrator.
