The third-generation iPad is finally here. As you unwrap yours, amazed by its Retina display and LTE connectivity, you may be wondering how to keep all those pixels and that extra cellular speed safe. Wonder no more, for we’ve already put together three different roundups of new-iPad-compatible cases, and we’re coming to you today with a fourth.
BlueLounge: The Shell (iPad 3; $30) is hard-plastic, snap-on shell that’s compatible with Apple’s Smart Cover and features a textured exterior for maximum grip. You can choose from three different design patterns in either black or white.
The iPad Sling (iPad, iPad 2, and iPad 3; $69) is a convenient carrying bag constructed of durable and eco-friendly PET material that’s made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles. The bag provides plenty of room for your tablet and other office essentials, such as papers and accessories, thanks to generous pocket space.
If you want a carrying case but you’re looking for something a bit more compact, consider the iPad & Laptop Sleeve (iPad, iPad 2, and iPad 3; $45), which actually comes in four different sizes—iPad, and 13-inch, 15-inch, or 17-inch MacBook Pro—and offers plenty of space in a small package.
Camalen: The Vision (iPad 3; $130) features all-leather construction and can prop up the iPad at two different angles for viewing. In addition, it features a special set of straps that can be used to secure the tablet to a car’s headrest for on-the-go enjoyment. The Vision is compatible with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature and comes in tea rustic, tan rustic, white floater, black crocodile, or black floater.
Case Closed: The company’s wool felt sleeves (iPad 3; £23 to £33) are handmade in England from all-natural German wool felt and come in two sizes: one for a bare iPad and the other for an iPad equipped with a Smart Cover. You can add an optional ultrasuede tab or a set of two black-elastic ties to keep your tablet secure during transport. The sleeves come in grey, black, or charcoal, while the optional tabs can be ordered in blue, orange, mulberry, or hide.
Gelaskins: The company has announced a full line of adhesive skins ($30 each) for Apple’s third-generation iPad. The skins come in a variety of designs, are less than one millimeter thick, and include matching wallpapers for your Home and lock screens. If you don’t like any of the stock designs, Gelaskins lets you provide your own image for a fully customized look.
Griffin Technology: The Survivor (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $80) is a tough case designed for active use. It meets the US Department of Defense’s 810F military standard for dust, shock, and vibration protection. It comes in black/black or a decidedly un-military pink/black.
The IntelliCase (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $60) brings together protective polycarbonate and flexible TPU plastic in a combination of style, protection, and comfort. The front cover folds and flips around to turn the case into a stand for viewing or typing. The case comes in midnight, peacock, dark red, or black.
The Passport (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $30) is a one-piece folio that looks and feels like an old-school book with a luxurious cover available in brown/tan, black/red, or red/grey. A microsuede interior protects your iPad from scratches and bumps.
The AirStrap (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $50) combines a snap-on shell with a hand strap to make carrying your tablet safer and more comfortable. It comes in black with a neoprene exterior designed to “hug your hand.”
Finally, the Elan Folio Cabana (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $50) is a folio-style case that can double as a viewing stand in either a viewing or typing position. It comes in blue or pink, and it’s compatible with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature.
Grove: The Wool Felt (iPad 3; $119) features a shell made of solid bamboo, combined with a sturdy cover manufactured from a single sheet of German wool felt. The case provides both shock absorption and improved grib. It’s compatible with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature and its wood surface is hand-finished for a smooth feel.
Orbino: The Padova Nuova (iPad 3; $209 to $689) is a form-fitting case crafted by hand from one of several different kinds of premium, high-quality leather. It features a protective cover that doubles as a stand and works equally well in landscape or portrait orientation. It’s compatible with Apple’s magnetic sleep/wake feature, and it comes in black, brown, pecan, or deep-red, bark-tanned Italian leather; cognac, black, mocha, or red ostrich leather; or brown crocodile leather.
Pad & Quill: The Octavo (iPad 3; $60) is a lightweight, handmade, bonded-leather case with a frame made from eight sheets of baltic birch. The case features the company’s Sure-Lock system to hold your iPad securely at a number of viewing and typing angles. The interior paper comes in blue, red, green, plum, or French Roast. A more luxurious version, appropriately dubbed The Octavo Luxury (iPad 3; $110) is also available. It provides two choices of leather color, is finished using bindery cloth, and features a convenient pocket for carrying a few extra papers.
The Contega (iPad 3; $90) is a self-propping case that features a baltic-birch frame and a luxurious, Spanish-leather exterior. It includes a hidden pocket and is compatible with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature.
Finally, the Graduate (iPad 3; $60) is covered in bindery canvas, but otherwise incorporates many of the company’s trademark features, such as a birch frame, Sure-Lock bumper system, and compatibility with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature. It comes in burgundy/hickory, deep blue/slate, or forest/espresso.
Rocketfish: Best Buy’s in-house brand has launched the My Way (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $30), a folio-style case made of durable, fine-weave nylon material that comes with a hand hold, a stylus slot, and two interchangeable colored straps to close the case’s front cover. The case can flip around to work as a viewing stand at multiple angles in landscape orientation. A faux-leather model+and+iPad+2/4919634.p?id=1218581190603&skuId=4919634&st=4919634&cp=1&lp=1) (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $40) is also available.
STM: The Skinny 3 (iPad 3; price unavailable) is a lightweight and slim protective case that features a soft, microsuede interior and a foldable front cover that doubles as a stand for viewing or typing. The weather-resistant exterior is available in blue, black, pink, grey, or red.
The Grip (iPad 3; price unavailable) is a snap-on hardshell that features a rubberized exterior for added grip. The soft interior lining helps protect your iPad, while the case, which is compatible with Apple’s magnetic sleep/wake feature, can fold around to function as viewing stand. The case is available in red, orange, black, or blue.
SwitchEasy: The Canvas (iPad 2 and iPad 3; $50) is a folio that features a combination polycarbonate/canvas design to combine protection, beauty, and scratch resistance. It’s compatible with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature, supports multiple viewing angles, and comes with a special latchless, self-adhesive cover. The case is available in black, blue, red, or brown.
USBFever: As its name suggests, the 2-in-1 Pouch and Stand (iPad, iPad 2, and iPad 3; $19) is a cleverly-built sleeve that can also be used to prop up your iPad for viewing in landscape orientation. The case comes in black or blue and is compatible with all iPad models—even the original.
