The game starts off with players being introduced to Skyland, a world full of floating buildings, miniature robots and funny little birds and mice. All of these characters combine to make one interesting community. The purpose of the game is to build factories, defense and homes to continue expansion. To build the city, the player must use coins to purchase these items and then use an arrow system (left, right, up and down) to guide them into place.

Unfortunately, the game is excruciatingly slow to start off. If one can get past this the game gets better, but it's a big hurdle and not easily overcome. The reason is that Sky Settlers is a freemium title so upgrading units and buildings costs multiple "batteries" and those batteries aren't easy to come by. Also, the upgrades are rather expensive. For instance, after a few buildings are in place it takes about four hours to build another one, but speeding it up costs about four batteries.

To offset the pricey buildings and new hires to run those factories and defenses, the game offers mini activities to earn coins and batteries. One of them is finding the lost robot where somewhere on the screen is a robot. Tap on it and earn a battery. Also, there are visitors popping over all the time and need to be transported to the nearest building of their choice. This awards the player coins.

Overall, Sky Settlers is difficult to get into if the player doesn't have a lot of time to spend to build up their city into a money and battery earning machine. This will detour most, but will entice those who are into sims.
