Hugo is a troll from a TV show in the 90s. I grew up in the 90s, but I unfortunately don’t remember Hugo. Hugo Retro Mania is a runner and maze game based on the forest troll from the 90s. I’m not going to start suggesting the game to everyone I see, but most players should get their 99 cents of fun from Hugo Retro Mania.

The game is split into two modes: Mine Run and Mine maze. Both have the same basic gameplay, but with different goals. Hugo runs along a cave while the player changes his lane between left, mid, and right to avoid obstacles and collect rewards. Obstacles include everything from carts to TNT to strange cave witches. The “run” mode is an endless mode where players rack up a high score. The maze mode has various mazes for the player to work through.

Accelerometer controls can be turned on. Since Hugo can only run in one of three lanes, it’s more of a ‘turn the phone to switch lanes’ control than a fluid accelerometer control. It was still an interesting change from the basic arrow controls.

The game shows high scores from other players when playing a new run or maze game. It’s cool to know who else you are facing for high scores without bringing up a high scores window.

At the end of each maze there’s a pure guessing game to save friends from what seems to be some sort of cave witch (sorry, I’m sure she’s an important villain for those who know the character). Ah, just found her name: Sculla. Scary.

I only had a couple problems with the game. First, a maze isn’t much of a maze when a map can be brought up at any time to pause the game and see where the player should turn next. Perhaps this game is better suited for young kids instead of an all ages sort of game. And the other problem was that the buttons are too close together in the menus. Specifically, “Mine Run” and “Mine maze” are too close together and I found myself playing the opposite mode I wanted a few times.

Hugo Retro Mania might not be the next hit, but I assume this would be a cool game to grab for fans of the old TV show.
