Speaking at the Technori Pitch showcase in Chicago, Dag Kittlaus, one of the co-founders and creators of Siri told attendees that Steve Jobs wasn't happy with name of the voice recognition service that became the headline feature of the iPhone 4S. During a presentation on start-up culture and entrepreneurship, Kittlaus explained that in Norwegian, the name Siri means "beautiful woman who leads you to victory." When Apple purchased Siri for $200 million in April 2010, Kittlaus had to persuade Jobs that the name should stay. Jobs was never convinced, though according to Kittlaus he failed to find anything he liked better and so it stuck.

Now, the name has become almost synonymous with voice interaction, with the tech used as a benchmark for other services to try and match. Kittlaus left Apple in October last year, but his choice of name has become firmly set as one of Apple's brands.
